Organization Background:
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a US non-profit, tax-exempt, private organization established in 1895 that saves wildlife and wild places by understanding critical issues, crafting science-based solutions, and taking conservation actions that benefit nature and humanity. With more than a century of experience, long-term commitments in dozens of landscapes, presence in more than 60 nations, and experience helping to establish over 150 protected areas across the globe, WCS has amassed the biological knowledge, cultural understanding and partnerships to ensure that vibrant, wild places and wildlife thrive alongside local communities. Working with local communities and organizations, that knowledge is applied to address species, habitat and ecosystem management issues critical to improving the quality of life of poor rural people whose livelihoods depend on the direct utilization of natural resources.
Program Overview:
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is a not-for-profit conservation and research organization actively engaged in Bangladesh since 2004 to save wildlife and wild places through science, conservation action, education and inspiring people to value nature. WCS Bangladesh collaborated with the Government of Bangladesh to establish three Wildlife Sanctuaries to protect Asia’s last two remaining freshwater dolphin species in the Sundarbans, and three marine protected areas (MPAs), namely the Swatch-of-No-Ground MPA in submarine canyon and estuarine waters offshore the Sundarbans, the Nijhum Dwip MPA offshore of the Nijhum Dwip National Park at the mouth of the world’s third largest river system: the Padma-Meghna-Jamuna, and around the Saint Martin MPA in the far south-east, to balance the protection of threatened marine megafauna, including dolphins, porpoises, whales, sharks, rays, and sea turtles, with sustainable fisheries for a healthy ocean and healthy people.
Since 2014, WCS partners with government agencies and local communities to improve protected area management, combat illegal wildlife trade, and enhance capacity, collaborations, and commitment for safeguarding wildlife and wild places in Bangladesh. We support the capacity of the Forest Department for SMART wildlife enforcement and monitoring patrols across the Sundarbans and for combatting illegal wildlife trade through improved collaborations, capacity, and coordination with the Department of Fisheries, Customs, Police, Navy, Coast Guard, and Border Guards. We conduct scientific research and educational outreach for effective area-based conservation and species protection and facilitate the inclusive development of policies that aim to sustain equitable governance of natural resources aligned with international commitments, including the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), and the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS). The WCS Bangladesh Program is part of the global WCS network (to learn more please visit, https://www.wcs.org/; bangladesh.wcs.org) and is registered with the Bangladesh NGO Affairs Bureau, Registration Number: 2750.
